About Us

History:STAR was established in 1952 by parents who believed that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are entitled to the same basic opportunities in their home community as other children and as an alternative to institutionalization. Today the organization has grown to include a full array of services for over 500 individuals with disabilities and their families, from birth to their senior years. Services are provided in Westport, Wilton, Weston, Norwalk, New Canaan and Darien.

Mission & Goals:STAR is a not-for-profit organization serving individuals of all ages who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as providing support services to their families. We create opportunities for individuals to live full lives with independence, freedom of choice and personal growth by providing support, services and advocacy. We inform and encourage the community to recognize and appreciate the value of all individuals. Our goal is the inclusion of all individuals with disabilities in their community.

STAR's programs include Birth to Three Early Intervention which consistently leads the state in the percentage of children who catch up to same aged peers or reach their age-appropriate developmental milestones through physical, speech, and occupational therapy. STAR's My First Job Program helps high school graduates with I/DD transition to competitive employment and engagement in the community. Likewise, in the Day Service Options Programs STAR participants volunteer in local communities delivering Meals on Wheels, shopping for the elderly,
